Resop Puts Away Bowar to Collect Title, “Diesel” Connects with Right Hand at WNCC 3 Print

The name-calling and trash-talking that erupted last week put an added excitement for Saturday night’s WNCC Middleweight Title bout, as “Doomsday” and “Meat” met to decide who the better man was. It didn’t take long. All Resop needed was Bowar’s back to finish off the fight with some relentless strikes. Chuck Hoskins needed even less time to end Ron Gordon’s night at WNCC 3 in Fond du Lac.

As is always the case, it had to be settled in the cage. WNCC founder not only pitted two top-ten 185-ers in the state against one another, but threw a championship belt in the mix as well. Lukas Bowar (8-4) was looking to continue his winning ways most recently coming off a win over Tim Nixon in just 28 seconds. Brad Resop (4-1) was attempting to do the same, rolling in off a victory against Tommy Metoxin. Resop also had the added pressure of fighting in his hometown, and the fans certainly came out in numbers (and in sheer volume) to support him.

Bowar, sporting a Jason Miller-esque hairdo, pressed the action early by rushing in for a takedown up against the cage wall. Struggling to connect his hands behind the legs of Resop, Bowar was unsuccessful and quickly found himself in a guillotine choke that took the action to the mat. Releasing himself from the hold, Bowar moved to the back and appeared to have a rear naked choke sunk in fairly deep. But it wasn’t just a choke attempt, but a twisting neck crank that looked as if Bowar may uncork the Unified Martial arts competitor.

Escaping out the second potential fight-ending submission in the early going, Resop moved to Bowar’s back where he would ultimately put him away. Flattening Bowar belly-down on the canvas, Resop swung with continuous left and rights that forced Bill Finn to step in and stop the bout at 2:39 of the first round. The back-and-forth battle subsequently earned the Wisconsin Combat Sports Fight of the Night.

However, words were not exchanged between the middleweights, but by the heavyweights as well. Ron Gordon (1-1) called out Chuck Hoskins, feeling he wasn’t paid the respect by Hoskins he felt he deserved. Hoskins (1-0), stepping up to the professional ranks after an impressive amateur career, may have put some of that to rest.

Following an early exchange of strikes to feel one another out, Hoskins connected with a big right hand that immediately dropped Gordon to the mat. Additional shots were simply academic, as the Scorpion’s Alliance fighter had finished his opponent in 51 seconds, inspiring him to quickly scurry up the cage wall and backflip to the floor. The looping right also earned “Diesel” the Wisconsin Combat Sports Knockout of the Night.

In an impressive performance earlier in the evening from the amateur ranks, Gracie Barra’s Russell Jackson swooped in for a double-leg takedown that put Darnell Williams on his back. Easily passing to full mount, Jackson was unable to keep Williams pinned to the canvas, especially given the energy being displayed by Williams just moments into the bout. The Team Davis combatant was able to escape out the backdoor from underneath Jackson, but impressively got thrown into a vicious armbar that immediately forced Williams to tap at 41 seconds of the opening frame. Although Jackson garnered the Wisconsin Combat Sports Submission of the Night for his terrific jiu-jitsu work, Williams suffered a rather serious injury that required a makeshift sling on his left arm.

The event was dominated primarily by technical knockouts, as nine matchups required the referee to step in and save a fighter. Jason Tunks defeated Eddie Neron after improving his position to full mount, as did Coyne Borree in a win over Nate Huntington. Bill Paape got the better of Matt Dain throughout their continued exchange of haymakers, and ultimately put Dain out on his feet up against the cage wall in the second round. Rick Dimzoff took Kevin Laock's back and laid down enough strikes to require a stoppage.

Known for his high school wrestling success, Jeremy Maye translated his skills to mixed martial arts in a dominating win over Josh Nowicki. Maye displayed that wrestling prowess, keeping Nowicki on his back for the overwhelming majority of the bout, in some cases so much that it could have drawn a “10-8” or two on some scorecards. In the end, Nowicki lasted the full three rounds, but Maye took the unanimous decision.

Sick Armbar!
That Gracie kid Jackson's armbar was the sickest! Crazy fast and tight. dude should've tapped before it snapped. Being tough isn't always being smart.

Good show. Good luck Brad against Sam. Bowar better work pretty hard for O'Malley. O'Malley is a killer who'll exploit any weakness.

Good Times at WNCC
Enjoyed watching Deisel finish pretty strong, for a big guy he's f'n agile. The crowd was really into the event thumping and banging on the fighter's walk-ramp. They seemed involved in the key fights and brought a ton of cheers and jeers. The armbar/2-part break/dislocated shoulder move by Jackson was nasty. Jeremy Maye put on a wrestling clinic and that rough-neck is going to go somewhere quickly.
