With more than 60 distinctive fighters with varying experience and skill levels, the Wisconsin Fighting Championship allowed fans to enjoy some of the state’s most established athletes and also witness the evolution of some of the rawest up and comers.
On Saturday, the WFC packed the Wisconsin State Fair Park with the “Super Brawl” card. Between the effortless execution of a Von Flue choke by 32-year-old Eric “Red” Schafer and the sadistic leg kicks by 16-year-old Serg Pettis, all types of combative sports were on display over the weekend.
The night consisted of two new WFC MMA champions, two new WCF Caged Grappling champions, and a bevy of great matchups.
Pitbull Snaps Black Mamba
In the “Super Brawl” main event, Submit Sport’s Emmanuel “Pitbull” Sanchez squared off against Adrian Serrano Combat Gym’s Jason “Black Mamba” Norman.
The fight began with both combatants meeting in the center of the cage and wildly throwing punches. As they then became locked in a clinch, limbs flailed from both Norman and Sanchez.
From the clinch, “Pitbull” landed a knee as the “Black Mamba” simultaneously landed a left hand. Sanchez recovered first and delivered an uppercut that stunned Norman. After a failed standing guillotine, Sanchez connected with a head kick that dropped Norman.
With his opponent on the ground, the “Pitbull” attempted a rear naked choke, but quickly realized that punches would better serve his purpose. After some heavy bombs the referee was forced to call off the fight, declaring Sanchez the new WFC lightweight champion.
Hasch and Meins Leave It All in the Cage
The other championship MMA battle was waged between Jonathan Meins and “Johnny Boy” Haasch in the bantamweight division. From the opening seconds, it was clearly evident that it would go down as the night’s best fight.
Early on, the crowd favorite Hasch threw a superman punch that staggered Meins. After also receiving a one-two combination, Meins shook out the cobwebs and delivered a right and left combination that turned the tide.
Meins went on the offensive as he landed knees to his opponent’s body. With momentum on his side, Meins tossed Haasch to the ground and quickly gained side control which he stayed in until the round ended.
Much like the first round, the second frame began with Haasch attempting a superman punch. This time, Meins avoided the punch and delivered a leg kick. Meins then delivered a right hook and took Haasch down with a sweep.
The majority of the second round played out on the ground as Haasch used his rubber guard to secure an arm bar. Both fighters traded top position as the round ended with Meins and Haasch rolling to a stalemate.
The third and final round began with Meins missing a left hook. Haasch responded with a leg kick and then followed with yet another superman punch. The leaping haymaker sent Meins to the canvas but somehow he made his way back to his feet.
After regaining his composure Meins once again turned the tide by landing a number of uppercuts to Haasch’s chin. Feeling the fight slipping away, Haasch swept Meins and gained the full mount.
With the crowd erupting behind their man, Haasch began pounding the face of his downed opponent. After nearly ten seconds of covering his face, Meins turned his back and stopped defending himself, forcing the ref to call an end to the battle.
The bantamweight title fight between Meins and Haasch did not dissapoint. The fight changed momentum countless times, saw a great display of traditional grappling, and also displayed some exciting striking. The fight easily earned the WCS Fight of the Night.
Grappling Championships
While striking took center stage in both MMA title matchups, some of the card’s most interesting bouts came in the form of grappling.
In a battle for the 265-pound WFC grappling title, Eric “Red” Schafer met David DeLao. Early on Schafer took DeLao to the ground and gained the full mount. In what seemed inevitable, Schafer transitioned from DeLao’s half guard, gained side control, and sunk in a deep shoulder choke.
In an instant, DeLao went limp as Schafer informed the referee that it was over. After DeLao regained his senses, Schafer earned the WFC grappling championship and the WCS Submission of the Night.
Schafer’s Roufusport teammate Anthony “Showtime” Pettis faced off against Ed “Earth Quake” Blake for the WFC welterweight championship. The majority of the match saw Blake in top position, but not necessarily controlling the action.
Early on, Pettis went for a rolling heel hook but ended up on his back. Blake immediately leapt into Pettis’ full guard. After a rubber guard reaped little reward, Pettis used his explosiveness to create space and attempt a quick gogoplata. While the move wasn’t secured, it did allow “Showtime” to get back to his feet.
The matchup eventually ended with both grapplers playing a game of combative chess on their feet. Blake walked to his corner feeling confident about his top position, however referee Omar Choudhury decided that Pettis’ aggressiveness earned him the victory. Blake and his Waukesha MMA teammates were extremely displeased with the result.
Serg Phenomenal
Not very often do Junior MMA matchups get media attention. However, after witnessing the unnaturally mature Serg “The Phenom” Pettis destroy his competition, it is obvious that Wisconsin has found its number one blue chip prospect.
Pettis, the younger brother of the aforementioned Anthony, hammered opponent Levi Johnson with cruel leg and body kicks. While Junior MMA does not allow strikes to the head, Pettis punished his opponent’s legs and torso for three straight rounds.
After decisively earning another victory, it is obvious that Pettis has unlimited potential. While combat sports are notorious for anointing fighters as the next big thing, “The Phenom” has all the tools to become one of the sport's brightest stars.
The Jet Lands Bombs
In a kickboxing matchup against Corey Schmitz, Benni “The Albanian Jet” Izairi landed a devastating one-two combination that ended his opponent’s night. The beautiful punches earned Izairi the victory and the WCS Knockout of the night.

... Jon Meins is one hell of a fighter and he fights all for the love of the sport which makes it an even more interesting story. A lot of people may not know but Jon barely got paid any money because he doesn't even care about the money he just wanted to fight because he loves it, I'm glad to say he's my friend and I hope the best for him down the road at Dukes. Good luck Jon, take this somewhere. |

... aka "Mike anderson". So your new to WI, correct? How new, because that will come into play later. I wasn't aware Duke had a gym out there, I'll ask him about it next time I see him. Just so were on the same page. I will tell you this is a fact no one will argue. There is a difference between a Team name, and a Martial dicipline, do you know what Vale Tudo means? I'd bet you don't. As for it being in, as you say "it should be in a big nice "special" gym, I doubt the originators of this dicipline had electricity. So, you were with Roufusport, good choice it's always my 1st reccomondation for the serious fighter, the guy you know has the heart. ScrapYard MMA is the name of the team, we're just A bunch of guys with one common goal, to workout out of a "barn" or something you said. Did you have a butler growing up Anyway you must have washed out of Dukes doubletime if you in fact a student there,(yet "new" to WI). Don't worry I'm not gonna bother asking. We have spent a lot of money buying used equipment to make it a safe yet aggressive gym. Yes, it's in a pole barn. Problem I have is I'm tapped, can't afford to insulate it, and buy heat, but that's coming. Ask around, anyone who knows anything about MMA's Elite will tell you, most of us started with little to work with, let alone focusing on our paying day jobs. Ask Ed Herman, Chris Leben, ask Tito Ortitz what he had to work with. I Got it! Your nickname is "Fancyboy", anyone out there believe you do what ya gotta do to train, we even run in the Hartford High School. Since you're looking for a gym definately go to Knock-Out, Jesse will have you 100% fight ready in just days. Last thing Mike anderson, my 185er will give you the bang for your buck, either way. You will love this, OL' School |

... Congrats to David & Nikki from Typhon, & Jonny Boy Hasch, what can you say. The kid was an absolute heathan. his "W" was well earned, by not only a great fighter, but a great trainer, David Rhodes as well. As I've said many there were no real losers in this fight, although there certainly was one winner. As far as Mr. Meins, your fight would have beat just about anyone @ 135 that evening, except for Jonny Boy. You have earned just that much more respect in the MMA community, you too have the Heart of the Warrior. I expect your future to be whatever you want it to be. OS |
