The UFC is to mixed martial arts promotions as Major League Baseball is to America’s pastime – everyone else is just living in the minors. But that comparison can only be made after years and years of struggle to get off the ground, and following a 2001 purchase made my Frank and Lorenzo Fertitta to take over.
By late 2006, Zuffa had acquired World Extreme Cagefighting, and they had the ability to do that after riding a $222+ million year. Next was Pride, which brought the sport full-circle and introduced the Zuffa/UFC brand overseas while opening the door to top-flight fighters such as Mauricio Rua and Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira.
Despite the backing of impactful businessmen such as Donald Trump, Affliction folded in the midst of a failed performance-enhancing drug test by one of its largest stars Josh Barnett, and only existed long enough to put together two events.
Following a rift between the clothing sector of Affliction Entertainment and the UFC, the brand was banned from the Octagon after rumors developed that Affliction was planning to set out on its own. And even with the prized possession that is Fedor Emelianenko, they didn’t have the ability to absorb the loss of a huge main event just days before it was scheduled to take place. Once again, Zuffa stood on the mountaintop alone, looking down at those failing to even touch its feet.

Mega-promotion not Co-promotion I don't get why people think co-promotion is such a good thing. I don't think it works well for boxing. Just look at the Paquiao/ Mayweather negotiations. I want to see the best fight the best and that seems to happen under a mega-promotion more often then co-promotion. In some way, strikeforce cost us the opportunity to see if Fedor is as good as everyone says he is. And if he is, how come Scott Coker isn't talking about a championship match for Fedor...I'll tell you why...because his co-promoting self can't make it happen. |

... Combat_fan, I think you got it twisted, the UFC is the reason the biggest matchups won't happen. The UFC wants control of everything, and if you know anything about business, competition is good. Unfortunately in all professional sports, there is a business side and there's no getting around it. The UFC has created a monopoly in the sport and they have been bullying their way around the sport, and i have several examples that I won't get into yet. The truth is, Strikeforce is very good for the sport, it gives fighters another option and if your a fighter you understand that options are good. I'm sure Strikeforce would ablige in setting up Lesnar vs. Fedor or Mir vs. Fedor. The UFC is who won't allow it because of their greed. It's awesome to see a Promotion with some class able to succeed with great talent and great shows without being bought out by the power hungry giant. Go Strikeforce, a refreshing change for the sport.... |

Fedor "strikeforce cost us the opportunity to see if Fedor is as good as everyone says he is" Are you kidding me? Nobody needs to tell you how good he is, just look at his record and watch his past fights. He is 31-1-1 and has beaten 5 UFC heavyweight champs. You might as well say Michael Jordan is unproven because he never took on LeBron James. Give me a break. |

It is no secret and it’s largely accepted that Zuffa rules the world of mixed martial arts. The parent entity owning the UFC and WEC, Zuffa has shoved aside and triumphed over other companies’ attempts, watching them come-and-go. Others they felt had a shot to challenge them, even on a global scale, they just simply bought out. One imploded on its own. But now a promotion not yet four years old appears to have the legs to prove there can be more than exclusivity in the MMA business.
