robsmith1Near the end of August, one of Wisconsin’s most experienced mixed martial artists, Rob Smith, announced that he was hanging up the gloves; however, Smith was unable to turn down a fight with Cyrille Diabate which will take place tonight in California.

In an interview with WCS in the summer, Smith said that increasing family duties, a number of different jobs, and an overall lack of interest influenced his decision to retire.  However, Smith said that a big payday might make him rethink his retirement.

Smith’s comeback bout will take place in the Palace Fighting Championship.  The bout will take place at the Tachi Palace Hotel and Casino in Lemoore, California.  The match will be one of the night’s headlining bouts, along with fights between Xavier Foupa-Pokam vs Anthony Ruiz, and Diego Saraiva vs. Eddie Yagin.

The Roufusport fighter has a career record of 20-13-1.  He has won eight of his last nine fights, including a memorable submission victory over highly touted Caleb Nelson in July.

His opponent, Cyrille “Snake” Diabate, is also a very experienced fighter.  Like Smith, Diabate has won eight of his last nine fights.  His only loss in that span came against Mauricio “Shogun” Rua in September of 2006.  His most recent victory was an armbar submission over Marcus Hicks in October.

Tonight’s matchup will pit two experienced athletes who are most likely near the end of their career.  However, a win for either fighter could open up a few new opportunities that could keep them in the game for a while longer.

Before his decision to retire, “The Bayview Brawla” was ranked as the state’s top ranked light heavyweight.  Fans around Wisconsin were clamoring to see a matchup between Sam Alvey and Smith.

With a win tonight, it would be interesting to see if Smith’s passion for the sport is reinvigorated.  Stay tuned to Wisconsin Combat Sports for updates on how Smith fares in his comeback.

Technically PFC folded over the summer. The event is now called the Taichi Fighting Championships. They actually abide by CSAC sanctioning oppossed to the PFC who did not.

Good luck to my Bay View Brother Rob. Nicest guy you'll ever meet.

Found a site that is doing a live play-by-play. I'll post the results once it's over.
