bowarOver the past few years, Lukas Bowar has proved to be one of the state’s most aggressive and exciting fighters; he recently sat down with WCS to discuss a number of topics, including his unique style, his ideal opponent, and his future in the sport.

Before embarking on his journey into mixed martial arts, Bowar was a standout rugby player at UW-Parkside.  After his collegiate athletic career was complete, he needed to discover another way to pass the time.  He ultimately chose MMA.

Training

Brandon “The Icon” Heat, Bowar’s MMA pseudonym, currently splits his training time between Gracie Barra of Wisconsin and Agallar Combative Systems.  He said that both gyms allow him to train different parts of his game.

“I get my wrestling, my positioning…and my boxing from ACS, and I get my Muay Thai and jiu-jitsu from Gracie...Dave Rosenmarkle is one of, if not, the best submission teachers in this state…And Nick Agallar is one of the best fighters on the planet…”

Impressive Resume

With the guidance from both Agallar and Rosenmarkle, Bowar has amassed a professional record of 7-3. Despite the fact that he won his first title in under thirty seconds at Rage In The Cage in September, his victory over Joe Billups in November of 2007 still remains Bowar’s fondest memory.

“This dude was probably the most intimidating guy I’ve ever seen,” said Bowar.  “We went toe to toe for like six minutes beating the (expletive) out of each other.  I ended up TKOing him in second.  It was a slugfest…I still tell people he is the toughest guy I’ve ever met in my life.”

Constantly Learning

Along with his seven wins have also come three defeats.  Two of these defeats have come from the state’s top ranked light heavyweights, Sam Alvey and Caleb Nelson.  Bowar said that he learned important lessons from the losses.

“I learned against Sam Alvey to finish, play your game, and not (expletive) around.  After he knocked me out, I learned to cover when I throw punches.”

Bowar is currently attempting to secure a rematch with the state's top light heavyweight.  However, he said that Alvey is “not keen” on the idea.  He also said that while Alvey is a “great fighter” and a “hell of a nice guy”, he is sure that he would win in a rematch.

Scariest Moment

One of Bowar’s other losses was to Panoply’s Nelson.  However, the loss was trivial compared to what could have happened.  After Bowar attempted a leg triangle, Nelson picked him up and slammed him to the mat.  The match was stopped and Bowar was taken off on a stretcher.

“I got slammed down and everything went limp,” said Bowar.  “I had a bad stinger…I was able to walk around later that night…but that was the scariest (expletive) moment in my life though…I thought it all came crashing down.  Imagine thinking that you’re crippled the rest of your life, that’s what kept going through my mind.”

Middleweight Ladder

With a full recovery after his August battle at King of the Cage, the recently crowned SC champion feels that he is ready to climb the middleweight ladder.  He is currently ranked behind Dave Kleczkowski, Pat O’Malley, and Karl Turek.

“Do I think I have the possibility of beating any of them?  Oh yes.  Would I fight any of them? Oh yes.  These are all good guys, top of the line fighters, but I want to be a top of the line fighter too.  I want that number one spot, so I’m going to have to start coming at those guys soon.”

While Bowar’s ideal fight may be a rematch with Alvey, he is scheduled to fight twice in November.  At Mike Biddle’s upcoming Who’s Next Combat Championship, he will face Tom Metoxin.  Most likely, he will also headline Racine Fight Night 5 on November 28, and is currently in the midst of setting up a bout with Turek in January.

With a solid career already under his belt, Bowar believes that he has only scratched the surface of his potential.  He believes that he is getting better each and every day, and his improved abilities will be on display in his upcoming fights.

“I believe I’m going to make it somewhere big...I want to prove that I’m the best middleweight in Wisconsin. 2010 is going to be the year of Luke Bowar…If you want to see someone who goes out there, gives it his all, and is ready to smash the face of anyone that is put in front of him, then come to see me fight.”

Ive followed sam alvey from the start he might be my favorite fighter. At the same time I cant deny how much bowar has improved and i cant deny how his new ground abilities would badly beat sam alveys as much as i hate to say it. But I dont blame alvey for not taking the fight its a lower weight. Bowar is the best at 185 i dont think anybody is going to be able to stop his new style in wisconsin. The last fight i saw of his was bitchin!!! Gook luck in the future keep up the good work! Go sam! You already knocked him out once!

Luke has it all going for him. Hes got undeniable talent, a huge personality, and the look that the people love. The kid will definatly go far in MMA. He is also one of the nicest guys you will ever meet and would honestly give you the shirt off his back. Not only that but he has Dave Rosenmarkle and Gracie Barra behind him. You cannot get better technical training when it comes to BJJ. Rosenmarkle's ground game and submission sets are uncanny sick.

You mix that with Luke's strength, heart, and skill, and you got yourself a serious contender. Bower is gonna RAGE in 2010!! Its gonna be an exciting year!

I'll go on record as stating I will fight Lucas anytime he'd like. This is the second interview he's mentioned Turek, Dave K, and myself as guys he'd like to fight. The first time was about 6 months ago and oddly enough I know he's been offered at least two of them since the first article. And, also just as odd, he has fought Tim Nixon since last he stated he wanted to fight any of the top three.

I was a little turned off by things said in this article about Sam Alvey, and absolutely disgusted at the audio interview posted. This is coming from someone within Sam's club, so of course I am going to be biased. Sam does not get half the respect he deserves. He is not only nice, but a hard worker who has strong beliefs inside and outside of the cage.
I'll say what I am thinking flat out. Lukas Bowar, you do not deserve a rematch with Sam yet. You came up to him and hung on his shoulder at KOTC in the summer, but never said, "You have my belt, man!" Instead you picked an prodded at him for a rematch. Sam does not believe in rematches unless they are earned. He has been working his butt off for a possible rematch with Caleb Nelson someday. He does not think he has earned it yet, or will in the near future. To prove this point he has been offered a rematch with Caleb multiple times, but has turned them all down. He has real work ethic and expects the same out of anyone that wants a rematch with him. When you came up to him at KOTC you had only had one fight since loosing to him (and yes you lost fairly, the closest you were to beating him in that fight was with the sucker punch you threw right off the glove tap. He may never hold that against you, but I will). I am not sure how you thought one win against a 4 - 19 fighter (no offense intended towards this fighter, I do not claim to know him or his abilities, just that he is not high ranked and does not have an enviable record) earns you a rematch. Since then, you lost to Nelson and have won a title. Perhaps if you keep winning and get higher in the 185 rankings Sam would be willing to fight you. He has only been offered one fight with you and it was for a 185 title that he is not looking to hold at the moment. I am appauled that you would talk about your fight and Sam the way you do. Only time and records will stand to show talent at the end of the day. So far sam has amassed an impressive ammy and pro records at 6-1 and 7-1 respectively and two titles in the two years he has been fighting. You are both young and have lots of room to improve. Maybe try to focus on making yourself someone Sam can't say, "I beat him and see no purpose to training again and wasting a fight on something I have already done," Prove not only in words, but in experience that you are not the fighter you once were and that you present a challenge to the fighter Sam has become, and then go ahead and call him out. Until then, you do not deserve a re-match no matter how many people you tell, "He has the belt I would have won! I almost choked him out! I deserve it!"
As for Sam Alvey fan, I don't think enough has been seen to comment on whose ground game is better between the two. Much time has passed since Sam has been seen in a ground fight, and as is said with Bowar, with time skills can be honed, so I do not think you should be so quick to judge Sam's ground game.
Applause goes out to Pat O'Malley, you're my hero!
Unless things change, I wouldn't expect to see a rematch anytime soon. This is not a matter of being afraid of a loss, but rather Sam holding other fighters to the same standard he holds himself to.

Lukas I was there when "Smile'n Sam" KO'd you in the first round at RFN about a year ago Late Nov. I remember it well! You lifted your head up and had it taken off. With this interview I do not see the respect that one fighter should, and almost always gives another, let alone the guy who knocked you out. By your logic, if he is no good then you are no good, and I believe neither.
Sam Fought, and lost to, Calib Nelson in a decision and paid a price for it. You lost to Calib on the ground, in the 2nd rnd., carried off on a stretcher, and less then a half hour after the fight you were up and walking around and drinking and joking about it. I was also there!
"Icon", you have lifted your head up again only now you have stuck it up your own ---.
I am positive you and "Smilen Sam" will Meet in the ring again, kind of like Good vs. Evil will always be there, but you, Like Sam, must prove yourselves for any legitimate rematch.
Good luck against Pat O'Malley. Your gonna need it!
P.S. I'll be there

Luke
Ever since Luke switched gyms he has gotten better, both in his game and his personality. I remember training with him at Strassers, and truth be told he annoyed me to no end...Fast forward a year or so and I run into him at RFN, what a huge difference. I think Rosenmarkle and Nick have really directed Luke in a positive way. I really wish the best for him. His skill sets have increased exponentially. I am in retirement, lol, after my 1-0 long career, but - MOD EDIT - Respect the other members on the site. This is your warning.

look guys. i consider myself a friend of both sam and luke. the comments made by luke in my opinion were a little out of line, but thats between him and sam. im a training partner of luke's, and sam and his team have really been helping me train for my next fight at RFN 5. both are good guys, and i thank them for making me a better fighter. please dont let this turn into unnecessary, online drama. Its natural to want to protect your friends, but really let this stay between those two.

Karl Turek is not fighting Jan 23 vs. Lukas. The promoter who proposed the fight owes our camp 2500. I do not see the fight happening on that show.

The fights with Mr. O'Malley & Mr. Turek were offered at Gladiators but was declined by Mr. Bowar's Manager. Love to see these fights happen.

I agree with lukey. No comment on all this bickering. I think any of the proposed match ups sound dope tho, espicially the O' Malley one. I think both guys are exciting fighters with entertaining personalities. I think Pat's experience, straight toughness and well rounded skill set would be interesting matching up with lukes youth and size, intense athleticism and jiu jitsu. someone should get that fight put together! Maybe on madtown or gladiators or nicks show? thoughts?
