We've seen James Warfield flatten fighters with his buffalo-strong punching power, but at Madtown Throwdown 21, “The Unbreakable Heavy Hitter” showed us he's much more than just a striker.

Badgerland Jiu-Jitsu swarmed upon the Alliant Energy Center Expo Hall Saturday night as local hero and Badgerland lead instructor Mark Severtson went into battle against the Madtown Throwdown Lightweight Champion, James Warfield (Chosen Few).

Led to the ring by seemingly his entire academy, Mark Severtson had the daunting task of beating the unbeatable. Warfield's record at the Madtown Throwdown was 6-0, 16-4 overall, not to mention the Jason Voorhees-like mystique that surrounds him. Of his past 12 victories, 12 have come via knockout and even though he lost his last fight against Yves Edwards, Warfield's confidence has never been higher.

The battle for Warfield's lightweight title began with both fighters throwing rangefinding type punches when Warfield connects with a quick left, right combo that stuns Severtson a little. A bloodthirsty Warfield came in for the kill and his right hand haymaker is met with a well-timed double leg takedown.

On the ground now, Severtson is controlling his opponent as Warfield stays active with armbar and then a triangle choke submission attempt. Severtson passes to half guard and tries to pepper Warfield's head with punches to the delight of the Severtson faithful. Warfield stuffs the rabbit punches and shows an evil grin as he gets back to full guard. Severtson then postures up and Warfield's legs follow. Warfield sinches in a triangle choke and Severtson is forced to tap out at 2:56 of the first round. The striker out-grapples the grappler.

“He went for that triangle and I saw my escape opportunity but it went, it happened so fast,” Severtson said. “I wasn't expecting his ground game to be anything, and that's why I relaxed because I got him down so easy. I just assumed it was going smooth sailing.”

Big mistake when you're sailing Warfield's waters. The Chosen Few Gym has remained steadfast in saying everyone has been sleeping on Warfield's jiu-jitsu because he's never had to use it since no one can get through his hands. Finally this was his chance to showcase those ground skills.

“I'm like ok, I'm going to try my best to out jits a jits guy,” Warfield said. “I'm like, 'He's going to posture up,' and as soon as he postured up I just snapped it in.”

You couldn't have written a better script for James Warfield. The heavy hitter wins via triangle choke after losing by the same move just six weeks ago to Yves Edwards.

Severtson, who moved up from 145 to Warfield's 155 pound weight class, had kind words for the Chosen Few fighter.

“I just hope some of the bigger shows recognizes him and gives him that chance like WEC, UFC. Give him that chance to put him out there and see what he can do to represent Madison and Wisconsin because I know a lot of the Milwaukee camps get the bigger shot because they've got bigger names. That's not always true where James, I believe if he had Randy Couture behind him he'd already be in the UFC.”

Madtown Throwdown's main attraction once again put on a show. It's something the fans have become accustomed to although lately they've come to expect the unexpected with Warfield's last two victories coming by way of head kick and triangle choke.

“And the part I love about everything... the fans, man,” Warfield said. “Did you see the fans man? I like the fact that there was just as many screaming for him as there was for me. But when it was all said and done, everybody looked at me and just shook their head at me like, 'We don't know what's next.' I don't know I might do a drop kick off the top rope.”

The night's co-main event featured heavy handed Eric “The Hammer” Hammerich versus Fabio “The Brazilian Murderer” Mendes.

From the getgo, Hammerich comes out throwing lefts and rights like his life depended on it. Clay Guida would be impressed with punches in bunches like these. Mendes followed with repeated left leg kicks to the body. Finally one connects flush to Hammerich's midsection and "The Hammer" is noticably weakened. But then, in almost Scott Smith fashion, Hammerich loads everything into one big fury and catches Mendes with a big right hand and finishes him on the ground, Dan Henderson-at-UFC-100-style.

This was quite an action packed minute and 22 seconds. After the fight, Hammerich grabbed the microphone and with Madtown Throwdown Lightweight Champion Smile'N Sam Alvey sitting cageside, Hammerich screamed out to the crowd, “I want Alvey's belt!” Alvey then entered the ring and seemingly accepted the challenge. “Let's have a great fight,” Alvey said.

In the night's fight of the night two heavyweight sluggers waged a three round war that left the cageside seats spattered with blood. Kevin Kelly (Strasser's Freestyle Academy) took on Matt Hirsch (Trainer's Elite) in a brawl that left the crowd cheering, “one more round”. The fight was marred by warnings to Hirsch for headbutts on the ground and knee strikes to the netherregions that resulted in a point being taken away from Hirsch.

In the end, the match was judged a 30-26 (Kelly), 28-28, 28-28 majority draw that left the crowd unsatisfied. These two are sure to wage war once again to settle the score.

Former cast member of “The Ultimate Fighter Season 9” Jason Pierce (Miletich Fighting Systems) proved he is over his injuries suffered on the reality show by defeating the very talented Jordan Faas via rear naked choke in the second round. Thankfully the fashion police were not in attendance because Pierce would have been arrested for sure for wearing trunks only Lyle “Fancy Pants” Beerbohm would appreciate. Despite the fashion hazard, Pierce controlled Faas to the ground where Pierce finished the fight.

If not for the Warfield triangle choke, Brian Learn may have claimed the submission of the night. Facing undefeated Ismail Figero, Learn attempted numerous submissions including a heel hook, a kneebar, and about four armbars. The fight ended after Learn injured Figero's elbow during an armbar attempt forcing Figero to tap. “I popped it,” Learn said in the ring with a menacing look in his eye.

Grappling prodigy Andy Acker made his MMA debut at the Madtown Throwdown and if anyone in the audience turned away for a moment, they might have missed it. Ellis took Acker down quickly and fell right into the fight ending triangle choke 29 seconds into the first round. A very impressive debut for Acker.

Another fighter walking away with a victory was Gabe Garcia, who used his size advantage to overpower the returning Demian Decorah via decision in a heavyweight matchup.

David Olivia also remained unbeaten with a victory over Lee Defoose, while Tony Rook and Jesus Flores also had their hands raised with wins by rear naked choke.

Anyone who watched James's fight with Yves Edwards should have known his ground game was on point. He took and kept Edwards back for a long period and looked great in the scrambles.

Congrats James.

By the way, you guys still suck at proof reading. smilies/wink.gif

Yeah, you'll see some photos soon Peter. Also thanks for the message about giving live updates. I probably wouldn't have done it had you not sent that message.

One other thing, apparently Ryan Williams has selected himself as chief of the grammar police. Here I thought the article was pretty good. Sorry I didn't meet your standards. I'll work on it and get better just for you, buddy.

Major props to Warfield. Big things are just around the corner.

Mark you are a good dude man, I got nothing but respect for you, for one because you stepped up and took a challenge that many people wouldn't, and second because you are a true fighter and warrior. Thanks to Pat and Ronnie for putting on a great show and thanks to all the fans who came out and supported me, that means a lot. And to the Badgerland students keep training hard and getting better you guys have a hell of an instructor. A very special thanks to my jits instructor Kain Rizzo for taking the last 4 weeks to really focus hard on helping me with triangle defense and applying them. Great job to all the throwdown fighters even the ones who lost cause you guys gave it your all. As for me a few days off then back at the gym for me. Last but not least I would like to give a BIG thanks to Chad for always giving us a good story. If he keeps this up I might have to call my executive friends and have them get him a job reporting for NBC!!! LOL LOL smilies/grin.gif

Yes James I think we had a bigger crowd yell for us then some ufc fans do, that was so awesome, nothing makes a fighter feel good like hundreds of people cheering you on, the booing and crickets is lame, and we had none of that at this show. Again it was a honor to fight you.
Ryan I watched that fight, that is where i made my mistake, was not thinking he could learn so much from his back, so fast. I paid the price too!! I don't have a scratch on me, so I can take that lesson and learn from it(I hope) my goal was not to be knocked out, and make it out of round one. I made it safe out the ring but got locked up at my own game...love it!!

We all have those moments Mark, hell you fought James when a lot of guys don't even want his name mentioned in the same breath as theirs. Props for that.

Chad - You guys need an editor someone to read your articles for you, it wasn't a knock on you, but the site for not providing that for you. The article was well written, however the best article in the world will lose its value if it is riddled with errors whether they be factual, spelling, or grammatical.

It's called criticism, when you put yourself in the publics eye you can kind of expect it. Take it for what is worth.

I would just like to say how proud I am of the Freestyle Academy for fighting well overall. Oliva's win looked effortless, Kevin Kelly may have lost techincally but that was more of a reffing error since he was kneed in the balls dead on dropping him once per round. Why he wasn't allowed to recover for those until round three is beyond me and he still brought the hurt to his opponent. Either way, that fight was awesome to watch. And Garcia looked decent against Decorah who is always a good fighter who brings it. Madtown Throwdown was, as always, a great show.

No problem Ryan. It definitely needed more work than I thought. Thanks for the feedback.

I hope the Throwdown keeps up their momentum. Much praise goes out to Pat O'Malley and Ron Faircloth for all the time and effort they put in to make it such a great show.

Ron and Pat put on another awesome show. Andy Acker looked like a veteran in his first ever fight, The freestyle academy guys brought it every fight, and all our guys from chosen few fought hard and I'm proud of all of them.

ANd for the record, I wasn't surprised at all by James's submission victory and anybody that was hasn't seen James fight recently. Big things right around the corner for him.
