After deciding to begin training at Unified Martial Arts in Fond du Lac, Jake "The Bad" Omen will be looking to get back on track with a win against former training partner Chris Befera at this Friday's Wisconsin Cage Fighting card in Appleton.
Omen, 3-6 via Sherdog, last fought in March against Dan "Danny Boy" Downes. Downes bested Omen via TKO near the end of the second round. Omen said that the fight taught him an important lesson.
"I learned a lot from the loss to Downes," Omen said. "I realized that I need to react to my opponents strengths and weaknesses during the fight. If the guy can strike, I need to take the fight to the ground and vice versa. I need to do whatever it takes to win the fight."
The loss to Dan "Danny Boy" was Omen's fourth loss in his last six fights. He realized that if he was going to improve as a fighter, he also needed to diversify his training. Along with his training at Third Heaven Martial Arts, Omen decided to do the majority of his standup training under Mike Biddle at Unified Martial Arts.
"I'm super confident after making the move to Unified," Omen remarked. "The gym has more fighters, I'm getting to do some more sparring and doing all around harder training. I honestly feel that all of my areas are improving. My game is going to the next level."
His new instructor agrees. "Beforehand, Jake had decent striking, but I don't think that he necessarily knew how to use it. He never had anybody to show him any decent kickboxing. He had the raw skills, but now after training here, I can see that he is finally putting all the pieces together. From the time he came to my gym until now, he looks like a totally different fighter."
With his newfound skill set, Omen is looking forward to his fight against former training partner Chris Befera on Friday. Befera is 2-0 as a professional, and has won both fights via guillotine choke in the first round. Omen and Biddle are very aware of Befera's guillotine.
"We have been training to avoid that guillotine," Biddle said. "So far from what I've seen, Befera has shown himself to be a one-trick pony. He wins by guillotine, but Jake has a lot of reach and has improved his takedown defense. I'm really excited for everyone to see a different Jake Omen."
According to Omen, he is also excited for the fans to see his ever-improving ability. "I feel like I'm going to be able to show people a new side of me. Chris is a super tough dude, and I know he will bring his "A" game. We are good friends before the fight, and we're going to be good friends after the fight. But when the cage locks, it's a whole different ball game. I am willing to do whatever it takes to win this fight."
The fight between Omen and Befera has the makings of a very interesting battle. Differing fight styles, prior knowledge of each other's abilities, and the opportunity to climb the 145-pound rankings, should make for an intriguing fight.

... I'm picking Befera for this one! He is just so much more talented from what I've seen than Omen. I haven't seen much of anything from Omen personally. I believe even if he wins this one, he won't be thought of as any better. |

... My vote is for Omen. Kid is tough as nails and a cool guy. Unlike his coach. Kidding. Biddle's a cool guy too. |
