dukeroufus1When you're Duke Roufus, you're always on the front page to some degree. Now, for the first time in two years, you can read Part One of what Roufus had to say about the future of the Wisconsin fight scene...

On the Gladiators and Wisconsin Cage Fighting Promotions:

"Actually, right now, we're cutting back. There's only going to be three Gladiators shows a year from now on. We're going to do another project called Wisconsin Cage Fighting. Little bit smaller, not as expensive shows and take those to some of the smaller venues around the area. Then, you know when Gladiators shows are coming, we're coming fully-loaded with a big-fight type of show."

"Then, November 7 is the next big show. We're negotiating with someone special from the Milwaukee area... It'd probably be the coolest person we could get on a show at this time."

"I'm very honored that so many people were so compelled by the Pat O'Malley/Dave Kleczkowski fight. There was a lot of hype leading up to that for a local fight."

On the Relationship between Gladiators and other Wisconsin promotions

"We do work with all the other guys, especially Pat [O'Malley], with Mike [Carbajal], with Adam [Sandoval] trying to exchange fighters. KTK, too. "

"Wisconsin Combat Sports has really helped. Wisconsin Combat Sports...has been a big help with creating big fights. Now there's a forum where people see who should fight who."

"I see big fights happening in Madison all the time, I see big fights happen at EFC. Just talking to [Carbajal] today about-- he's got some big things planned for his Fall show. That's how some of us are already thinking. We're already thinking about the fall, that's how excited we are about what we're doing and what's going on. So, I think all the promoters are going to have bigger fights. Especially when you got a hometown guy and you bring in a better guy against him."

On the Wisconsin Talent Pool:

"I think it’s double-edged. I think, coming up, there’s awesome talent, and to prove who’s the best in the state…that’s a very interesting promotional item. But what happens is a guy like James Warfield— I think there’s no one left available for him to fight…Donovan [Foley] just relocated to Minnesota, so he’s no longer a Wisconsin contender. Sergio Gomez...That could be a superfight. That’s the thing: certain fighters are gonna be the best in Wisconsin at their weight and they’re gonna be forced to find out where they’re at in the game."

"That was the goal with Dan LaSavage. He wanted to fight Joe Pearson [to potentially get signed with the WEC]. Unfortunately, didn’t happen. Then he fought another tough guy [Ishmael Figueroa] and he fell short."

"That’s the thing—if you’re gonna bring a guy in from out of state, I’d like to see a bigger name come in. Don’t take an opportunity from a Wisconsin guy."

"If you’re gonna bring an out-of-state guy, don’t bring some bus driver in. And I know match-making happens all the time, last minute. It’s the hardest thing with MMA. You know, Joe Pearson pulled out the Wednesday before he was supposed to fight Dan LaSavage [on Saturday]. The three longest days of my life."

On Dream Matches:

"Me, I’m a hardcore realist. I don’t like “dream matches” because they’re only dreams. But my dream-reality matches? Love to see Sergio Gomez and Warfield. They’re the two best un-signed 155 [lb]ers. I think it would be a big draw amongst the fight fans."

"You know what fight I’d actually like to see again is O’Malley and Kleczkowski. Be kind of interesting. I think it’d be a good sell again."

"The other thing too that people don’t realize is the [O'Malley/Kleczkowski fight] at the Harley [Davidson Showroom] was in a 20-foot cage. The cage we normally use at all the other Gladiators shows was a 24-foot cage, so that changes things. It’s only four feet, but a big cage changes everything."

"I’d like to see Henry Matamoros back in the cage…I’d like to see someone grapple with him in the fight. Like someone play hardcore jiu-jitsu war, vale tudo-old school on the ground…show people how good he is."

"I’d like to see Jon Friedland…he doesn’t want the pressure of being the best…but the guy’s got a lot of potential. Love to see him show his potential."

"The funny thing is, the contenders below [Friedland]: [Gerald] Meerschaert and [Jake] Kuester, are all more grappler types, too. So they would be somewhat more interesting fights."

"I’d like to see maybe [Karl] Turek and Ron Faircloth, possibly."

"[Rob Smith] and Reese Shaner would be interesting at 205 [lbs]."

"Paul Martinez is coming down to heavyweight. Like to see him match up with any of the other heavyweight contenders."

"Sam Thao versus Dan LaSavage would be tasty later in the year."

"I’d like to see [Brian] Geraghty fight the winner of Mark Severtson and Joe Blake."

On the Wisconsin Fight Scene:

"It’s such a healthy environment here. There’s so many good gyms, so many good fighters. Truly, I mean that sincerely. I think there’s an unknown element out here. They think Wisconsin, cheese-heads, we don’t have anything going on out here. You keep thinking that. While you’re sleepin’, we’re creepin’ out here. Guys are getting better."

Stay tuned for Part Two, in which Roufus discusses his training philosophies, what he looks for in a fighter and what he said to Pat Barry right after Barry lost his match at UFC 98...
